We present a computational design system for Blue Calicao, a Chinese traditional craft applying delicate decorative patterns on a blue square calicao. We define a library of geometrical elements based on traditional calicao patterns, and propose three types of hierarchical composition to combine these geometric elements into complete calicao-style patterns.
Using the design tool, users can easily choose the elements and compositions and generate their customized calico patterns with the distinctive traditional Blue Calico style. Users can also preview the customized calico patterns in both 2D view and 3D simulated calico models. The computational design tool offers an effective method for allowing non-expert users to access the design of the traditional delicate Blue Calico and further enliven the cultural heritage.
