In this project, we purposed a new music instrument design, Cheng, which is based on the concept of transforming the characteristic phrases in Chinese traditional pentatonic mode into tangible pieces in corresponding shapes. Users can compose Chinese traditional pentatonic melody by placing the pieces on a ”scale-time” two-dimensional chessboard, and have different experience through four interaction modes. The purpose of the project is to explore the tangible music design space of Chinese traditional pentatonic music, and in addition, to envision a new instrument or teaching aid towards music education especially for children.
